Survey

Concerning the article about a graph for usage of the internet according to age.  To some degree I agree with the author.  This really does seem like a maturity chart.  Older adults are using the internet, but are more discreet in what they write.  The younger generation does use technology more because they are growing up with it.  My husband and I can remember the first personal computer.  And now we have I pads.  My grand daughter who is three years old plays games on her mom's I phone.  What a change!  Have we come a long way or what!  I do agree that a lot of younger people are not to smart with what they post or send through the wire.  In a couple of years when they have matured they will probably do another survey with a lot of the same results.  The only difference is like the author said and that is they will be the ones who have matured.

One of the things that caught my eye about technology is something that has been talked about at my school.  And that is going paperless in the classroom.  This sounds really great.  However, how are you going to assess and what about grades?  I use my smartboard and elmo in the classroom alot.  I know for assessments that you could use the computers, but do all schools have enough computers to do this?  A lot of colleges are posting everything on line.  We have a computer set up at our school just for parents.  Surveys, regristration for seminars and activities are done on line now.

FERPA

Personally, I think FERPA is a good thing to have.  I am sorry that it is so overlooked or misrepresented.  Technology is great is the classroom.  Having blogs or wikis like anyother thing could save lots of time in the classroom.  However, people have to be informed.  What are the procedures that should be implemented in the classroom.  Educate the parents as to what exactly and how you are going to use technology.  A lot of times parents do not know or understand what is going on and therefore refuse to try anything new.  Just as grading papers and displaying students work needs to be accomplished but with a childs privacy protected. 

Things that could help when using technology:  have the parents give permission, have a parents night and show them how technology is going to used with a blog or wiki and have the students sign a contract also stating that they will follow procedures in the classroom.  The more detailed you get with procedures the more the procedures will be followed without problems.  Let the parents and the students SEE what will be happening in the classroom.

Chapter 1 Question

I believe technology integration is definitely happening in our schools today.  We see evidence by smartboards, comuters and optical cameras.  Edcuators in my school are using them every day.  We talk to one another about websites and send emails to each other about a great website we found.  My class is starting to use the smartboard at center time.  We (or I) just need more training and time to play around on the computer to find more things for my class.
