technology in the classroom

One of the things that caught my eye about technology is something that has been talked about at my school.  And that is going paperless in the classroom.  This sounds really great.  However, how are you going to assess and what about grades?  I use my smartboard and elmo in the classroom alot.  I know for assessments that you could use the computers, but do all schools have enough computers to do this?  A lot of colleges are posting everything on line.  We have a computer set up at our school just for parents.  Surveys, regristration for seminars and activities are done on line now.

  1. We have been conditioned to need documentation of all assignments so that we have that "hard copy" in case a parent questions an assignment or grade. I struggle with this paperless classroom as well. I recently used a borrowed set of classroom clickers to assess my students with a 25-question multiple choice quiz, and it was fabulous! The students responded to each question and there was immediate feedback for their answers followed by our discussion. At the end of the quiz, the results were summarized on my desktop computer, I printed it out, and added the grades to my electronic gradebook. It was more efficient and kinder to our environment. Using your elmo accomplishes a similar goal -- you don't have to make copies of what you are projecting to your smartboard, and students can interact during the discussion. I have an elmo but no smartboard -- I'm jealous! :)
