Intrensic - I will feel better about myself. Knowing that I tried to attain a new goal, master a new idea. Extrensic - this will affect your classroom. How you view yourself. I feel like my classroom changes with me. This year has been tough, but I feel like I have grown so much. I have stretched myself technically and accomplished small things. I love seeing how someone does something, reflecting about myself and how would I accomplish this. Another teacher came down and showed me how to download an activity for my class. Giving my kids the freedom to activities that will assist in mastery. How great is that!

I agree with you that it is an on going process for professional development. I have really pushed myself this year professionally to develop my skills. It has been hard at times, but a great feeling of satisfaction. Next year, I hope to learn something new again. It is exhausting. I wish our professional development could be what we want to learn, that does not always go with the district.

I appreciate your comments. However, I think we should always want to grow professionally. The profession we are in is always changing. If you do not accept a new concept there is the alternative. It is true that we do not get rewarded as much as others, but how can you push your students to achieve if you don't.

Professional Development

It is important to always stay updated in your profession whatever it may be.  Our world is always changing.  Whether you are a mother, student, educator or whatever people and time change.  If you do not change, you will be left behind.  I am a good example of this.  I can remember when sending an email would scare me to death.  I would always hit the wrong button or shut down the computer.  Now, I have come a long way because of this world of technology.  If you want to survive you have to know it.  Just the other day, my doctor and staff are now using laptops in their office.  He doesn't like it, but that's it.  If you want to continue in college, you have to know about technology.  Teaching is the same way.  My principal said that technology and writing are going to become the most important tools in school soon.

Another reason it is important for me is that I am always wanting to improve things.  Whether it be professionally or personally.  I guess that I am like the Army's slogan, "Be the best that you can be".

Thank you for not being offended. I agree that a lot of young people are just naive and uninformed about posting personal information on the internet. As I stated before, a lot of young people do not know the damage that can be done by listing personal information. Since I am one othe millennials, I do have friends and lots of things to talk about on line. The only problem is that I do not have a lot of time to put it on there. I would still rather talk to a real person. Also, I have never been much of a writer. I do think that it is true what you said that most older people have already had experience with publishing personal information or know of someone who has and know what can happen if it is in the hands of the wrong person.

Thank you for your comment. I, too, think that a lot of young people are not aware of how damaging the internet can be. Maybe parents hand their child a computer, but do not train them on it, as to how to use it and what websites are not safe and what information should not be revealed on the internet. A lot of older people, such as myself, are trying to keep up and probably have had bad experiences already in life with giving out private information to the public. Once again this is a survey. If this survey was given somewhere else, the outcome my be different. Mr. Dvorak could be quoted, but I think everyone if aware of this is only one survey.

I do agree with you about Dvorak's article in that a lot of young people do not have any sense when it comes to posting things on the internet. It is true that because of a younger age these young adults do not have jobs and have more time to be on the internet and let their thoughts run wild. Because of being older, I probably am too over cautious when it comes to putting any personal information on the internet. However, I did think that Dvorak had a good point in that a few years from now the younger ones could conduct the same survey and the numbers would be different. When you think about that most of the younger ones have grown up now with technology and the older ones are just figuring things out.

Survey

Concerning the article about a graph for usage of the internet according to age.  To some degree I agree with the author.  This really does seem like a maturity chart.  Older adults are using the internet, but are more discreet in what they write.  The younger generation does use technology more because they are growing up with it.  My husband and I can remember the first personal computer.  And now we have I pads.  My grand daughter who is three years old plays games on her mom's I phone.  What a change!  Have we come a long way or what!  I do agree that a lot of younger people are not to smart with what they post or send through the wire.  In a couple of years when they have matured they will probably do another survey with a lot of the same results.  The only difference is like the author said and that is they will be the ones who have matured.

One of the things that caught my eye about technology is something that has been talked about at my school.  And that is going paperless in the classroom.  This sounds really great.  However, how are you going to assess and what about grades?  I use my smartboard and elmo in the classroom alot.  I know for assessments that you could use the computers, but do all schools have enough computers to do this?  A lot of colleges are posting everything on line.  We have a computer set up at our school just for parents.  Surveys, regristration for seminars and activities are done on line now.

FERPA

Personally, I think FERPA is a good thing to have.  I am sorry that it is so overlooked or misrepresented.  Technology is great is the classroom.  Having blogs or wikis like anyother thing could save lots of time in the classroom.  However, people have to be informed.  What are the procedures that should be implemented in the classroom.  Educate the parents as to what exactly and how you are going to use technology.  A lot of times parents do not know or understand what is going on and therefore refuse to try anything new.  Just as grading papers and displaying students work needs to be accomplished but with a childs privacy protected. 

Things that could help when using technology:  have the parents give permission, have a parents night and show them how technology is going to used with a blog or wiki and have the students sign a contract also stating that they will follow procedures in the classroom.  The more detailed you get with procedures the more the procedures will be followed without problems.  Let the parents and the students SEE what will be happening in the classroom.

Chapter 1 Question

I believe technology integration is definitely happening in our schools today.  We see evidence by smartboards, comuters and optical cameras.  Edcuators in my school are using them every day.  We talk to one another about websites and send emails to each other about a great website we found.  My class is starting to use the smartboard at center time.  We (or I) just need more training and time to play around on the computer to find more things for my class.
